Each member of NHS must exemplify the following characteristics:
1. Leadership
2. Character
3. Service
4. Scholarship

Merits
Students will earn a total of 100 merits this year. Students receive 10 merits for each service project (independent and group). It is necessary to earn a total of 9 merits per month for 9 months, one for each meeting you attend, and 8 for service. This will add to 101 points, allowing for one missed meeting without an excuse. The purpose of the merit system is to help you establish a lifelong habit of service and leadership.

Demerits
Students will be given 5 demerits (deducted from your total) if you miss either a meeting or a club function without an excuse. You will also fail to earn the merits associated with each. If you do have a signed, verifiable excuse for missing a meeting or a function, you will not receive demerits, but you must attend a make-up meeting and do extra service to gain the points missed at the club function.

NHS is a service organization.  Each member must participate in one group project and one individual project per year. Many activities are sponsored by and attended by NHS students.
